keep going

I recently wrote a post on trusting that your great love will come along when the timing is right. Well, the same thing goes for creating the life you want...sort of. This takes work and dedication, but in the end you do have to trust that you'll eventually get where you want to be.

Those who work their booties off will get far. It might not happen at the snap of your fingers, and it might not happen next year. This is where it gets frustrating. Certain dreams are hard to make reality, and jobs aren't easy to snag, especially in this economy. This doesn't mean it's quitting time. It's easy to throw in the towel. It's harder to stay in the game.

Keep practicing. Keep studying. Keep dreaming.

I've come close to quitting many times. I had my dream of being a writer since I was a little tyke, and I went to college to pursue a writing degree. At graduation I threw my cap up, along with all my dreams and wishes for the future, and every single one came crashing down. I spent over two years searching for that dream job, while working part-time to make ends meet. I felt like a failure.

Instead of giving up, I decided to take a different route. I started graduate school to pursue education. It was the best decision I have ever made. I was offered a teaching job just two weeks ago, and I love it. It doesn't mean I gave up on writing. I get to encourage kids to write every day. I get to write this blog, and I plan on writing novels on the side.

Sometimes you have to change up the journey to get to a certain place. It doesn't mean you forget about your initial dream. It just means you take a different route to get there. However long it takes you to get there, don't give up. It will come, but you have to keep going. Don't let an economy or someone tell you no. If you dreamt it up, you can do it. It's just a matter of time and a whole lot of work.

  1. Wow - I really needed to read this. I graduated over a year and a half ago with a teaching degree and certifications to teach from BIRTH all the way up to 12th grade and have been struggling to find a job. I've just been subbing while also going to grad school for a literacy degree as well. I have really thought about switching careers and have even applied to jobs to do so. I have been applying to jobs ALL morning (it's 1pm here in NY) and am just so frustrated. It's nice to see this and I'm so happy for you to be teaching preschool! I always read your blog & have emailed you & you've emailed back. :) BTW - my first purchase as a teacher will be the Erin Condren teacher's plan book .. you would love it and should check it out! It's erincondren.com. Very pricey, but adorable! Good luck with everything & thanks again for this post!

  2. love this advice! I'm in the middle of college right now and worried about getting a job after! One that I like at least.. I'm glad that you are in a great place right now in your career :) It would be so cool if u got books published some day. Do you have another year of grad school left? What grade are you teaching?
